Happy Birthday Rosa Parks!

“The only tired I was, was tired of giving in.” – Rosa Parks

This is definitely my favorite quote from one of my favorite women in history. Today is her birthday and I want to speak on the notion of giving in and giving up.

Often in life we find ourselves disappointed. Yesterday, my personal Joe Biden (Alexa Johara – check out her blog btw), said something that really stuck with me. We were speaking about disappointment and she said that when she’s disappointed, she reminds herself that she’s not entitled to anything.

I remember how I felt four months ago. I was a month in to my final year of university and the build up of stress left me telling myself that I don’t care what I graduate with anymore, I want to drop out, I stopped going to class and I was genuinely at an all time low. Then I went back to the drawing board and started looking for inspiration and this quote from Rosa Parks uplifted me and reminded me that “this too shall pass”. We find ourselves in situations that we may feel can defeat us, but we are all undefeated over things we have control of. Learning to maximize your potential and finding opportunities within challenges is extremely important in life.

We’re living in a New World Order where ignorance can gain power, xenophobia and racism are both rife, sexism and violence are prevalent and we need to remember not to let things defeat us. We will all have great and horrible times in life, but pulling through and not giving up is the first step towards a successful life. We also all need a Joe Biden in our lives and a Rosa Parks too to remind us of who we are, where we belong and what our potential is! So Happy Birthday Rosa Parks, your legacy will always live on. Thank you for the inspirational reminders that you’ve brought my way and the lessons you’ve taught!
